MALIBOU LAKE AREA, Los Angeles County — Nearby Malibu Creek State Park marked its 50th anniversary in October 2026, a reminder of the public open-space network that surrounds communities in the Santa Monica Mountains.
According to California State Parks, the property includes land once associated with the former Crags Country Club and Century Ranch. Film crews later used the dramatic terrain as a location for productions including Planet of the Apes and M*A*S*H. The state bought the ranch land in the early 1970s, and the park opened in 1976.
Visiting today
The entrance is at 1925 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas. California State Parks lists a $12 vehicle day-use parking fee and hourly options, with qualifying passes and discounts. Visitors can find marked hikes, wildlife-viewing areas and historical interpretation, subject to park rules, closures and seasonal conditions.
The park’s 50th-anniversary announcement and public event page are useful starting points for learning about the area’s natural and cultural history. It should not be confused with private access rights or facilities within the Malibou Lake residential community.
