MALIBOU LAKE, Los Angeles County — People planning recreation near Malibou Lake should know about new regional wildfire precautions adopted in October by agencies that manage public lands in the Santa Monica Mountains.
On October 14, 2026, California State Parks, the National Park Service and two regional conservation authorities announced a coordinated protocol for closures during National Weather Service Red Flag Warnings. Agencies will use the geographic reach and severity of the official forecast to decide which properties may close.
Verify the specific park
Malibu Creek State Park and other mountain parklands may have different operating agencies and access rules. A red-flag warning should prompt visitors to verify the park’s actual closure status before making plans. It does not establish that every trail is closed today. People who encounter locked gates or closure signs should not enter.
The agencies said the coordinated rules are intended to lower ignition risks and reduce the number of visitors who might need evacuation during dangerous wind and fire conditions.
